PR and Communications Officer

Are you an inspiring communicator? Do you want to use your skills to influence change and make a difference to people living with cancer? Come and play a key role in delivering Sarcoma UK’s PR and Communication work. Influence change, build key PR and media skills for this rare lesser-known cancer.

We’re looking for a PR and Communications Officer to act as the first point of contact for journalists, assist with the organisation’s communications and press office function, create engaging press and communications materials, shape and deliver high impact media and communications campaigns, and speak directly to people affected by sarcoma, helping them to share their stories.

  • Salary: £30,000 p.a.
  • Hours: Full  Time (37.5 hours per week)
  • Location: Home and office-based (Angel, London EC1V).
  • Reports to: Communications Manager

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • As a key member of the Communications team, maintain Sarcoma UK’s reputation as a credible, authoritative and opinion-leading charity.
  • Work with colleagues across the organisation to ensure a consistency of messaging and positioning with key audiences.
  • Play a key role in the development and delivery of our media and PR plans to raise the profile of sarcoma cancer and its impact, and what Sarcoma UK is doing to take action.
  • Support with the development and delivery of our case study strategy to ensure we have clear, actionable plans to gather the stories of people with a diagnosis of sarcoma cancer and recruit more ambassadors.
  • Use your influencing skills to gather and disseminate these case studies to appropriate communications channels, including national media.
  • Monitor and help supervise the use of Sarcoma UK’s brand, giving advice internally and externally and improving representation of sarcoma cancer in the media.
  • Media relations: liaising directly with journalists, building key relationships, proactively selling in/pitching stories, finding appropriate case studies and responding to press office enquiries in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Proactively create press materials, including press releases, media briefings, Q&As, spokesperson notes and reactive statements or quotes, and supporting with planning and delivering high profile PR campaigns.
  • The Communications team plan to introduce cover of out of hours press office enquiries on a rota basis (for which time in lieu will be given).
  • Use our media monitoring service to evaluate and analyse media coverage, working closely with the agency, and taking any appropriate action required including sharing regular updates about media coverage across the wider organisation.
  • Lead on communications for projects across the organisation and cross-team working: Develop relationships across the organisation, setting up regular meetings and acting as the comms lead on core projects which may cover public affairs, support and information services, research or fundraising.
  • Shining Stars Awards; play a key role in the development of the new annual awards events, particularly in the media relations aspects of the awards and appropriate press activity for nominees and winners.
  • Create material for external presentations.
  • Lead, write, create and distribute Sarcoma UK’s e-newsletter every six weeks.
  • Support the copywriting and production of the charity’s print newsletter.
  • Working with agencies and freelancers on specific content as necessary.
  • Working with the communications teams of partner organisations and external stakeholders as required.
  • Regularly update and write copy for the Sarcoma UK website.
  • Support the Digital Communications Manager, Communications Manager and Director of FR and Communications on content creation, distribution and evaluation.
  • Support in the production of Sarcoma UK publications such as the Impact report and Annual Report.
  • Effectively manage suppliers, including the provision of compulsory licenses relating to media monitoring, designers and printers, and volunteers.
  • Maintain an up-to-date understanding of sarcoma cancer and current issues relating to it.

General

  • To support the Communications Manager to ensure the smooth running of the press office.
  • Be responsible for regular internal news updates on Sarcoma UK media coverage and sarcoma news.
  • Undertake administrative work, including providing updates on communications team activity and managing press clippings.
  • Support the Communications Manager with the charity’s media consent process.
  • Support the Communications Manager with media training for key spokespeople.

Key relationships

  • The role will work across all departments in the charity: operations, research and policy, support and information, and fundraising.
  • The role will involve frequent contact with Sarcoma UK’s freelance copywriters, designers, creative agencies, printers and photographers.

Other

  • The post holder will be working in a developing environment, and they will therefore be required to undertake other appropriate duties as necessary, for the efficient operation of Sarcoma UK.
  • Be prepared to work outside standard office hours (with time off in lieu) to support key events or activities, including as part of an out-of-hours press office rota.

Research Officer

Job Description: 

Research is at the heart of our charitable objectives at Sarcoma UK. The charity provides funding for research to understand sarcoma better, improve treatments and ultimately, make a difference to the lives of people affected by sarcoma. Since 2009, we’ve funded more than 70 projects, representing an investment of more than £5.5 million.

The Research Officer role enjoys a varied workload, and brings the opportunity to work with autonomy and develop new skills within a friendly and dynamic team. You will work on a broad range of projects, including taking the lead on our grant management processes, working closely with the Research Manager and the Director of Research, Policy and Support. The post-holder will also work closely with other departments across the charity, including producing engaging research communications content for print, online and social media, and will also have the opportunity to interact with senior researchers, clinicians and people affected by sarcoma.

This is an ideal role for someone with a scientific background and an active interest in research management, and it offers the opportunity to make a real impact for people affected by sarcoma and their families.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Sarcoma UK’s research programme

  • To administer the charity’s grant application processes under guidance from the Research Manager. This will include calls for proposals, identifying expert peer reviewers, administering a high-quality peer and lay review process, communication with applicants and potential applicants, administration of grant awards and supporting patient involvement.
  • To provide support to the Grant Review Panel and Research Strategy Committee, including organising meetings and preparing minutes.
  • To manage the charity’s portfolio of active research grants, under guidance from the Research Manager. This will include administration of newly awarded grants, monitoring progress of current grants, oversight of grant finances and reporting on final outputs.
  • To support opportunities for patient involvement within the research programme, including managing a network of lay reviewers and facilitating new opportunities, with support from the Patient Involvement Coordinator.
  • To support new developments in the charity’s research programme, including organising and attending events, collaborative funding calls and initiatives to support early career researchers.

Research Impact and Communications

  • To monitor and gather outputs and long-term impact of research grants funded by Sarcoma UK and support in ensuring these are shared with internal and external audiences.
  • To plan and produce engaging and reactive and proactive communications about sarcoma research, including website, social media, written and video content, working with the Research Manager and Communications Team to ensure our research activities and outcomes are shared with the sarcoma community and wider public.
  • To proactively engage with grant holders to gather impactful insights and to support engaging communication about sarcoma research.
  • To regularly review and update Sarcoma UK’s website with progress updates on research grants and promote funding opportunities.
  • To support with work undertaken by the Fundraising Team where required, such as lab tours and supplying information about funded grants for donor reports.

External relationships

  • To be a point of contact for Sarcoma UK grant holders and their host institutions.
  • To maintain positive relationships with Sarcoma UK’s research panels, potential grant applications, researchers and clinicians, and the wider sarcoma research community.
  • To work directly with a range of people personally affected by sarcoma to place the voice of lived experience at the heart of our research programme.

General

  • To support the integration of the research programme across the charity as a whole.
  • Attend Sarcoma UK events and take part in Sarcoma UK’s wider work.
  • The role will require occasional travel to meeting and events. Occasional weekend or evening work may also be required and time off in lieu will be given.
